Hi, my name is Susan and I have been a dental nurse for the whole of my working life. 2016 saw me entering my 50th year of working in a profession which I love and has had many twists and turns.
I qualified via the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses , with distinction, in 1969 and since then I have gone on to gain further in-service training in Advanced Dental Health Education, the Diploma in Health Education, Dental Treatment for patients undergoing General Anaesthesia and Sedation, the Dental Care of Patients with challenging Special Needs including adults and children who were terminally ill. My most recent qualification is topical fluoride application.
I have worked in the Manchester Dental Hospital training dental students in four handed techniques and served over 30 years within the Community Dental Service specialising in the dental care of children and adults who have special needs. Along this path I spent 10 years working with a specialist helping patients of all ages who had a phobia about visiting the dental surgery - we used relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy and relative anaesthesia and it was rare not to achieve success.
I was a tutor dental nurse at Hull College for 3 years, teaching evening classes for dental nurses who wished to take the National Examination.
1981 was the Year of the Disabled, it was launched by the MP Alf Morris who was the Minister of Disabled People.
To mark this special year I jointly raised enough money to buy a mobile dental unit for the City of Hull. It provided dental treatment for children with special needs – it took the treatment to the children in their schools. The unit would move from school to school and was designed to meet the needs of all disabled patients. Children did not have to lose a day off school in order to come for their dental treatment - they simply came out of class for short episodes of treatment.
I have also spent some years working in general practice, which is where you find me today - at Keen Dental Care and I have no desire to change.
I love my work and more importantly love to see the patients enjoy their visit with us. Yes it can be a little taxing for them at times but with my optimism and sense of humour we always come smiling through.
My husband and I belong to the Salvation Army which keeps us both very busy within the community - we both love any kind of music and just enjoying life together. I am an ardent Manchester City fan and was behind the goals at the 1966 World Cup Final.
At Keen Dental Care I like to think that we are a family of people who all look after each other, and more importantly , are there for the same reason - to provide you with quality dental care.
